lille at night.
Dinner at 10pm.
Navigating back and forth across the dark city.
Streetlights casting shadows across the streets.
The way the city was just as crowded and busy at 11pm as it was at 11am.
All things I miss about Lille.
All things that I won't find in this tiny Midwestern town.

i likelike you
Here's to all the crushers, the couples and the hopeless romantics this Valentine's Day. To all of us who admire from afar, dream of a future together and hoped for a text or a card today. And here's to the million-and-one ways there are to show our love.
Sometime in November, we sat and talked. I suppose we were sharing childhood stories, or something of the such. To be entirely honest, I don't recall the conversation at all. But ever since I was young, and of the cartoon watching age, I wanted to ride in a sleigh, and have the animal pulling, trying to reach a carrot on a string. This fall my mother got a Miniature donkey. Her name is Ruby and she is the sweetest. In his own head, That Guy came up with his very own idea for Christmas. He never once hinted towards it, nor did I. I completely did NOT know what to expect for Christmas. On the days nearing Christmas I did not see him very much due to the countless hours he spent in his shop, creating my Christmas gift. I was absolutely baffled. He built me a beautiful little sleigh for ruby to pull. Its festively painted (I wait all year long for Christmas) and the seat is beautifully covered in a deer hide from the first deer he ever shot as a kid. A little bit sentimental, right? I am still so amazed every time I look out the window.
and closed hearts raked
raw by winter winds whispering
chill, and hot cocoa (steam rising)
whisked from the air, the smell
of sun, clarity like light on water,
and him
(always him)
eyes smiling blue and hand closed
around mine, holding hearts
warm -- with the smell of trees
growing leaves
like a symphony that is our
own (memories of mornings
exploring) because we're
adventurers and february is good
for living.

I don't even remember the first time we met. It's funny, because that's something that I remember with so many other people. You just seem to blend into the back of the nearly-five years that I lived here. It was late summer when they started talking about you. My brother came back from playing board games with a group of friends. He informed me that he and a mutual friend decided that we needed to start dating. Either, "you would kill each other, or you'd fall in love." I laughed it off, and didn't really think about it. But then...they brought up the subject of you and I several times throughout the next few months, until finally, my friend gave you my number in early January.

I could say that the rest is history, but it isn't, not
really. We have plans for our next date, and I'm going to go see you
play baseball in the summer, and then you'll go to college in the fall.
Who knows what will happen beyond that? For now, I'm content with movie
dates and beating you at Wii Sports and the way you're reading the
Hunger Games because I said that you would like them. And in case I
haven't told you recently, I likelike you quite a lot.

I made this page three years ago.
It feels like ten though. It was made about someone long ago in my
past, but it makes me smile every time I see it. He made me happy. But,
I have got to say... Since then? I've found so much more beauty and
contentment in making myself happy. Learning that quiet nights with a
cup of coffee and City and Colour playing in the background (like
tonight) with designs to doodle and a few emails to reply to makes me
happy. I have beautiful days and sad days and hard days and sometimes I
make myself very unhappy. But, I hold a lot of power to change a lot of
that. I'm a single, fantastic woman right now and it's easy to get
bummed about being beau-less on Valentines Day. But, it's also pretty
easy to take yourself out to coffee and bring a rose back home to your
best friend (what I am doing on Valentines Day this year). Have a
wonderful Valentines Day and make it yours.
How was your Valentine's Day? Please tell your story below, if you want.

a pretty little valentine's outfit

Dressing up is one of my favorite things. There's something so lovely about pulling on tights and slipping a swishy, ruffly dress on; putting on earrings and spritzing perfume on your neck. This is a little valentine's outfit I've put together -- a pretty dress with a simple updo and a cateye is perfect for the big day.

Valentine's Day // gifts + currently loving
Although I'm not a huge Valentine's Day fan, it's fun to take a little extra time and effort to show others you care about them. Celebrating those you love with a simple and sweet card is always nice and definitely appreciated. It's the thought that counts they say, and while that's true, going a little out of your way to say, "hey, I like you," can make a friend or family members day a little brighter. And even though flowers and chocolate are the cliche answer, they're nonetheless welcome. Valentines Day is so not just for sweethearts -- its for friends and family and celebrating the people you love. So in that theme, here's a roundup of some gifts as well as some super sweet links that I know you'll love.

on singleness
.jpg)
I'm not entirely sure how to start this. I don't generally talk about my love life (or lack of one, that is) on such a public forum, partly because I feel I don't have much to say and partly, or should I say mainly, because I'm rather scared and hesitant.
I'm single. I used to struggle with it, wish I had someone else in my life, but over the course of the past few months, I've made peace with the fact. There's nothing bad about being single.
Still, though, haven't we all wished for a special someone? It's hard at times, I have to confess. And while I'm confident in the fact that my time will come, sometimes I still dream about that one boy and wish my time would come already.
But still, I'm single. And that's okay, because the fact of the matter is, my time just hasn't come yet. It's hard being patient. Waiting. Being content in this stage of my life isn't always easy, but heck, I'm fifteen. I still have time. And I know there will be a time when I look back at this moment, this second, and wish I could relive it.
Today, I am single and I am content because I know that there is One who has a plan for my life...every aspect of it.

a week in paint chips.
I've always had a bit of a paint chip fetish. When I was little, my dream job was to be the person who named the paint colours. (what can i say? i dream big.) Whenever we took a trip to the interior shop, you could always find me standing in front of that big wall of paint chips. Awestruck, I'd gaze up at the plethora of colours, picking swatches to my heart's content.
Years later, not a whole lot has changed. I continue to obsess over new hues daily, paint chips are forever scattered across my crafting space, and let's be honest - I still want to be that person who names the swatches. This past week, I documented each weekday in paint chips.

This may become an obsession, if it wasn't one already. Which of the colour schemes is your favourite?

interview with annie rose.
I have a lovely friend named Annie Rose. It's been a few years since I've seen her, but we keep up through blogs and facebook. Today, I'm going to be interviewing her. Annie Rose is 15 now, and living in China. She's the 6th out of 8 children, most of whom are in China with their family.
--So, Annie Rose. You live in Suzhou, China, right now, right?
Yes, I do. Suzhou is located in Jiangsu province and is about 70 miles west of Shanghai.
--Where did you live before China?
Before moving here I lived in a small town called New Castle, in Colorado. I was born in California though and when I was one, moved to CO.
--Aside from the obvious, what are a few things about China that are different from Colorado?
My family and I went from a population of 3000 people to 6 million, which you could consider a pretty big difference. In Colorado there was so much natural beauty and Suzhou is rather lacking in that area. Another big difference is we don't own a car here so we take public transportation everywhere. Taxis, buses, subways and trains are what we use to get around and I am quite happy with that. We also ride electric scooters (sort of like a moped) and bicycles a lot. (It's so much fun!)
--Are you learning the language?
We are. We have a Chinese tutor come twice a week for about an hour and a half each lesson. Living among the Chinese people helps.
--Have you made any Chinese friends?
We haven't really made many Chinese friends yet as we're still working on the language. But because we attend an international church we have friends from all different parts of the world which is pretty amazing.
--Is it hard having half of your family in America?
It is very hard, but they all came for this past Christmas (we haven't spent a Christmas apart yet!) and we will travel back to America in May for our vacation, so we haven't had to go very long without seeing them. (Thank goodness!)
--What's your favorite part about living in China?
Oh man. Well I could say public transportation, being in the midst of the city, anything like that, but I think that the Chinese people are the ones who make all of those things fun. So I would say living with the Chinese people in the middle of their crazy city.
--Describe a little bit of the city for me. What do you like and dislike about it?
--If you can say one thing to Fernweh readers about anything -China, living overseas, ect.- what would it be?
We live right next to a lake. Across the lake there are several skyscrapers and they've become somewhat like landmarks to us. There's a bus stop on almost every corner, which makes it easy to get anywhere in the city (the bus system is especially nice since we don't have a car!). We live in a newer part of the city called SIP where the houses are modern and not extremely Chinese, but there are many parts of the city that have been around for so long, such as "Old Town" which is surrounded by a moat. Little side streets curve off into the distance and canals run along side them. That part of the city is around 2500 years old. Suzhou is known as the "Venice of the East". A major canal city. Something that I dislike here is the pollution. Colorado has brilliant, blue skies. Suzhou's are more of a faded blue.
--What sort of school do you go to in China? Homeschool? And is it different than it was in America?
We actually are still home schooled. There are international schools here but they're a little pricey so as of now we're still at home. It hasn't been that different other than adding Chinese lessons and a couple of other subjects.
--What about the food? Is it what you were expecting when you moved there, or completely different?
--What about the food? Is it what you were expecting when you moved there, or completely different?
Chinese food is way different than American Chinese food. Frog legs, pig feet and chicken heads are some of the more "Chinese" foods. They still eat lots of rice and noodles along with all the weird stuff but you won't often find sweet and sour chicken on your plate. Fortune cookies? They're completely American.
--If you can say one thing to Fernweh readers about anything -China, living overseas, ect.- what would it be?
I'm really thankful for the opportunity to live in a foreign country and learn so many new things... to speak a different language, learn to become more capable, bargain when shopping (pretty fun), be open to trying new foods and new ways of doing everyday things and just to live life differently. I'll probably live in America for the majority of my life (but I'll hopefully travel a ton) so having this time here is so incredible. I don't know what God's plans for me are yet but I'm so thankful he's taken care of my family and me thus far and will continue to do so always.
