newspaper blackout poems

They're exactly what they sound like. Poems about newspapers and blackouts, exclusively! I jest, I jest. They are actually poems made by taking a section of a newspaper, blacking out the majority of the words with a pen or marker, and making a poem out of the ones remaining.  Here are some I made.

#1. "He created a hero"

#2. "Life printed on skin"

#3. "This star"

It takes a while because you have to figure out which words you want to keep and sometimes the ones you do don't always fit together. A lot of the time they don't make much sense, but that's okay, because it's poetry. It doesn't have to. I think these kind of poems are as much about art and aesthetic as they are about writing.

  14. Very cool! The article doesn't have anything to do with the poem you get out of it, does it?

  17. Kayla: No, it doesn't, though it is helpful to choose one with words you like. Even articles about boring things can turn out interesting poems, though. :)

  19. Amazing idea. I'm so trying this. ;)

In a way, isn't that what all poems are? Selecting small, little words out of a grand story to tell our own little one?
