night owl

I used to be more of a morning person, but as I grow older, I think I've evolved into more of a night owl. I've accumulated a bad habit of staying up later than I should. During the school year, it often results in tired eyes and a need for caffeine, but in the summer, it's not a big deal because I can sleep in. And I love it.

There's something about the night time that makes everything come alive, in a different sense than during the day. It's like all emotions are somehow exaggerated -- if I'm sad, I become despairing, but if I'm happy, I'm on top of the world. The absence of the light also makes me braver somehow. It's easier to spill secrets at one in the morning and it's easier to take a dare in the glow of the streetlights than it is under the sun.

Because of this, perhaps, night is when I am most inspired. It is when it feels best to write and to create. I tend to get my best ideas right on the edge of sleep. Sometimes, in the morning, I'll look back and realize they were actually terrible ideas I thought of before. But at night, it felt perfect.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? Or both, or neither?

  1. This is so weird that you say at night everything comes alive. I thought it was only me!! Really, though. I am more brave at night too. Everything seems less real. So cool that you experience that too. Thanks for writing about it. I loved reading it!

  4. I'm definitely a night owl, but I still love mornings -- just not the getting up part. ;)

  5. Same - I used to be way more of a morning person, but now...staying up late just happens. I don't always enjoy the consequences in the morning, though.

  6. Same as what Abby says, I'm a night owl but I do love the mornings, when I can get my lazy behind out of bed! lol ;D

  7. I know exactly what you mean about emotions being exaggerated and being braver at night! Sometimes that difference is a bit scary.

I'm not really a night owl or an early bird. I get up at around 7:00, every morning, no matter what. It's ingrained in me. And I go to bed a little after 10:00. I get ill (as in mean, not sick) when I stay up late or have to get up really early. I'm stuck in my routine. :)

  8. Night owl! It's true that emotions are exaggerated at night... but it's also comforting to know that, if I am sad, the feeling will not be nearly as acute in the morning. :) And what you said about getting your best ideas on the edge of sleep. I once got a whole idea for a story (I enjoy writing fiction) at night, and I had to scribble it all down so I wouldn't forget it. (Actually - now that I think about it, that happened twice... haha!)

  10. Totally a night owl, and i'm with you -- it progressed as I grew older. Really, I just wish I never had to sleep. Cuz I love staying up till three, and I love getting up early. :)

  11. I think I might be a morning owl! My liking of mornings has just evolved this year -- it's been a slow progress, but after months of waking up at 6am and making my breakfast while knowing the day belongs to me, I've come to love it. That doesn't mean I don't like a good burst of energy or creativity at night; they come often. I like both, but staying up late and sleeping in just doesn't do it for me.
