chalk typography.

a piece from last weekend.

I'm that nerd at the bookstore who stops dead in her tracks, because she likes the typography on the cover of a book. This may or may not have happened last week at the grocery store, too (it was a really nice apple sign, okay?) My mom smiled and nodded, but was probably just wondering how on earth she raised such an odd daughter...

I love fonts. I really do. However, I fail miserably at typography. Or any form of graphic design, to be honest. I much prefer tangible mediums, such as pencils and oil paints. Last summer, I painted a chalkboard wall in my bedroom. Needless to say, chalk has become a new favourite medium of mine. And though I still have so much to learn, I'm loving this juxtaposition of digital typeface and good old-fashioned handwriting.

What's your favourite art medium?

xx

  1. You're certainly not alone, Abbey — I love typography too. :) Your Fernweh piece is amazing. How neat to have a chalkboard wall in your bedroom! We have one in our family room, where we write good quotes, Scripture verses, or just random doodles.

    Thanks for sharing with us!

  8. You are fabulous with chalk! Love it! My favorite medium right now is pencil. Currently I am working on a graphite portrait of my cat!!

By the way, you write so very beautifully and descriptively :)

  9. That's lovely. I know what you mean! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who stops to stare at shop signs (instead of what's actually in the shop). ;)

  10. Typhography & fonts are so important. They really are! Me and my brother have endless discussions about our hate of Comic Sans, the pros and cons of Times New Roman and his love for Arial sans serif.
Your work is beautiful. I'd love to master hand-lettering this year!

I draw and doodle mostly. Pens, pencils, color pencils.

    1. well, you're in for a treat, then. most interior shops mix chalkboard paint in any colour you'd like. :)

  20. Chalkboard wall in your bedroom? That's so neat. :)
Love the Ferweh poster sketch. So neat. My personal alley is graphic design - I can predict what it will look like, instead of just hoping my handwriting will turn out well. :)

  22. Talk about talent! Girlie, your typography is so good. The real stuff is better - in other words, knowing how to do typography online is nothing compared to knowing how to do it well in real life!
